Characteristics Of Tungsten Carbide Sealing Ring

Tungsten carbide is a kind of multifunctional mechanical seal ring material. It is made by using tungsten carbide powder as raw material, adding appropriate amount of cobalt powder or nickel powder as binder, pressed into ring shape by certain mould and sintered in vacuum furnace or hydrogen reduction furnace. It is widely applicable to all (from PH12 to PH4) but the most acidic environments. Tungsten carbide seals have a unique combination of high fracture strength and high hardness to minimize or eliminate deformation problems at high pressures or rapid wear in abrasive environments.

It is a relatively common product produced and processed among carbide manufacturers. Because of its high hardness and good corrosion resistance, and because of its strong sealing properties, it has more applications in the petrochemical, machinery and valve, and many other sealing industries.    
The characteristics of cemented carbide seal ring are mainly.

1. After fine grinding to make the appearance of the precision requirements, its size and tolerance is very small, sealing performance is very superior.      

2. The process of adding corrosion-resistant rare elements in the formula, sealing performance is more durable.

3. The use of high strength and high hardness carbide material, not deformed, more resistant to pressure.

4. The material of sealing ring must have enough strength, hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and impact resistance toughness, etc.      
At the same time, the carbide seal ring also needs to have good processing type and reasonable economic type. Among them, wear resistance and corrosion resistance and thermal crack resistance are the most important requirements. And as we know, cemented carbide has a series of excellent properties such as high hardness, wear resistance, better strength and toughness, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, etc. Especially its high hardness and wear resistance remain basically unchanged even at a temperature of 500℃, and still have high hardness at 1000℃. Therefore, carbide seal ring has become one of the most widely used products in mechanical seals.

According to the different binders, tungsten carbide mechanical seal rings come in two primary types:

Cobalt bound (Ammonia applications should be avoided)
Nickel bound (May be used in Ammonia)
Typically 6% binder materials are used in tungsten carbide mechanical seal rings, although a wide range is available. Nickel-bonded tungsten carbide mechanical seal rings are more prevalent in the wastewater pump market due to their improved corrosion resistance compared with cobalt bound materials.
